Creative Cooperation - Four Drawings of a Dream

One dreamer incubated a lucid-flying dream of the Magical Mutual Ballroom.

The other illustrated her dream.

In July 1996, the Association for the Study of Dreams (ASD) hosted their 13th annual dream conference at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley, California, USA. The conference featured speakers, workshops and general events over a 5 day period. Bay Area Dreamworkers Group and the DreamGate webmaster sponsored a Communal Room where dreamers could meet and network.
Communal Magic was a group dreaming project. It gathered dreams about the conference, whether the dreamers were physically present at the conference or not. These were posted on The Flying Carpet, a mural brought to hang in the Communal Room. Some of the dreams were sent in by letter; some came e-mail, some were pinned to The Flying Carpet by the conference attendees.

Dream Ahead collected dreams dreamt before the conference even started. These came in from as far ahead as February. Some were precognitive; others were anxiety dreams about possible problems and conflicts at the conference. Still others were clairvoyant and there was a pair of mutual telepathic dreams.

Magical Mutual Ballroom came at the end of the project. The grand finale of the conference was a costume dream ball in the hotel ballroom.

It had been suggested that people from afar could attend the dream ball, too. But in the dream state. And in the dream state, people can do anything...even fly. So one of the Dream Ahead dreamers dreamt up a ballroom dream, which was illustrated by yet another dreamer, as an example of Creative Cooperation.

Creative Cooperation

Four Drawings of a Dream

Donna LoCicero Campos and Terri Segal cooperated in a dual creation for the Fly-By-Night Club's Communal Magic group project.

Donna was co-moderator of the weekly Compuserve chat line, Dream Studio. She deliberately set about to have a dream about the Magical Mutual Ballroom (at the Claremont hotel) and her incubation was right on target. Not only did she dream about a hotel party, Donna became aware of the fact that she dreamed. She deliberately engaged in the magical act of flying.

Terri designs flying jewelry. Her sterling silver creations feature people or animals with wings. Animals like cats and lions, that is. Terri illustrated Donna's dream, using a storyboard of four images. Each image was drawn with a regular drawing pencil on 11 X 14 stock drawing paper. Terri says she drew the images very quickly, almost without thinking. She just let her hand move across the page. She says it was a very spontaneous process, almost like doodling. Then she filled in the images with color using pastel pencils. She added more color 2-3 days later.

My husband, Robert, and I are hosting a pre-party cocktail party in our hotel room. The guests are my ex-husband's East Bay softball team and their wives and girlfriends (people I haven't seen in years, didn't feel strongly connected to when I was married to F. and feel a little odd about seeing now.) The hotel room is crowded with a lot of drinks and laughter.

It's time to move on to the main event now. Robert and I, along with a tall, hulking softball player whom I can't place are the last to leave.

When we reach the elevators I realize that I've forgotten my purse - I might need my ID. I agree with Robert to meet him in the lobby and go back to get it. I search the room but I can't find it anywhere. I give up, go back to the elevators and as I'm waiting for them realize that the hotel room doors here don't lock automatically. I've probably left the door open. Sure enough, it's open and ajar a couple of inches. I lock it and suddenly realize that there's something odd about the key. What is it? I'm totally confused for a second until I figure out that this is the room we have stayed in in the past - room P13 on the 8th floor and this is an old key that I forgot to give back to the front desk. Our current room is on the 1st floor on the other side of the hall. How could I be so confused? Robert must be worrying by now, wondering what's taken me so long. I've got to hurry. I feel a strap on my shoulder and there is my purse! Not the one I've been looking for, but a 'fancier' model. I decide to take the stairs this time and run down them, mystified by my own confusion.

The stairs are wide, graceful and white. Near the bottom I see a woman in her early 20s with shortish brown hair stand in the path of a young Japanese couple. "I'm from Temecula!!" she shouts. "Are you waiting for me???!!" They look nervous, unsure of what she's saying. They shake their heads "no" and hurry away. She falls drunkenly into a bush. A couple of pals help her up.

The lobby is jam-packed with people, potted palms, music and neon. A dozen people are waiting in line at the front desk. Many more are milling about, talking in small groups, wearing name tags. There's an entrance to a bar across the way. It looks crowded from here. I don't see Robert anywhere. I worry that if I go back up to our room 1st floor this time, I might miss him.

Suddenly, I get it. I'm dreaming!! I can't believe it! After all this time (had a dry spell) I'm lucid at last. I simply stand there for 30 seconds with a huge grin on my face, savoring the feeling. Then I think, "Where is Robert? I've got to tell him about this." (Dream logic <g>)

I decide to fly around the lobby's high-ceilings anyway to get a better view. I float up about 15 feet. I fly above the coifs of three very lacquered beauty contestants. They look a little uncomfortable and I can't help giggling. I fly by a professional basketball team. "Hey! Can I play with you guys sometime?" I'm flying on my side now, my elbow bent, my hand on my head, just over their heads study in nonchalance. I'm showing off.

"Not on your life!" one of them says with a grin.

I consider looking for Robert thru the elevators but decide against it. There is a bank of three elevators - made of what looks like carved, gleaming bronze and I'm afraid that if I spend a lot of time flying thru walls and wandering thru elevator shafts I'll get all preoccupied and loose my lucidity. I decide to abandon my search for Robert altogether. I'm going flying.

I fly up through the lobby's ceiling. I'm about 10-12 stories high now. Thunder crashes like in a 1940s movie - not quite believable. It starts to rain. Pour, really. I won't fly too high - don't wanna get hit by lightning. (Good dream logic, huh?) It's close to sunset but the sky in the west is still well lit pinks and purples, dark blue and gold. The lights are turning on everywhere. I see what looks like Cinderella's castle in the distance.

And now I hear it, faintly at first, just the opening notes before the melody kicks in. Now its louder. Now I'm . . . "Singing in the rain, just singing in the rain. What a glorious feeling! I'm happy again . . . " I fly with big, gliding ice skater's poses. "I fly down the lane with a happy refrain!" I'm belting it out now, "I'm singing and flying in the rain."
