3) Lucid Clairvoyance: The Flying Carpet
The Flying Carpet is a decoupage of pieces of cloth
material which hangs on a wall in my home. The background is a large, light-blue
and white sheet, printed to look like the clouds of a summer sky. Along
the bottom edge is a landscape of forest, lakes, animals. A castle-like
villa sits atop a grassy hill.
The Carpet was originally a 2-part costume that won a prize for "Most
Colorful" at the 1988 ASD Conference. Half of the costume was worn
by myself; the other half by Jill Gregory. When we stood together and held
out our arms to reveal the full picture, we combined forces to form a graphic
representation of a "mutual dream."
The Flying Carpet staged a comeback at the 1996 ASD conference. Both
pieces were pinned to a wall in the Communal Room where it served as the
backdrop for dreams posted by conference attendees. Ahead of time, folks
at a distance intentionally incubated Flying Carpet dreams, although they
did not know what the Carpet looked like.
Early that year, Lucky wrote me this e-mail message:
On February 12, the following short dream came to me:
| I am semi lucid, and am aware that I am at the threshold of a doorway, looking
slightly up at it from a short flight of solid block-like steps. On each
step, as well as through the doorway is a painting of a beautiful vista;
including a soft blue sky with white cloud formations, and a clear wide
expanse of soft green meadowland. I am about to enter this lovely place,
then, as I start becoming more lucid, instead I wake up. |
I thought this might be a good entry for the Flying Carpet
mural. The paintings on the steps, as well as the painting through the doorway
(all in the same style and similar colors) gave the scene somewhat of a
surreal appearance. I am sending you a quick sketch in the regular mail
today.
After I received Lucky's colored sketch, I took one look at her picture
and thought, "Oh, my gosh, she's dreamt the Flying Carpet!" I
told her, "The wall hanging is located directly above the stairs leading
to the second floor. The section of the Flying Carpet you drew, I can just
see through my bedroom doorway. Congratulations!"
I noticed one difference between Lucky's picture and the Flying Carpet:
the "road" that she sketched is actually a brown fence next to
the meadow on the mural.
But the shape is exactly the same.
