Two To The Moon, 7/14/88

First, I am on the ground, then flying but a few feet above it, through the dark and mist. A slender, fair young man joins me and complains wistfully that he cannot rise very far off the ground (he can only skim it about 3 feet above the surface).

At that, I reach out, put my right hand into his left and say, "Well, come with me." I raise my hands upward Superwoman style and together we soar to roof and hilltop level above the fog. Leveling off horizontally, we fly at this altitude for a moment, then tilt upwards again and go through the dark cloud layer hanging over us.

We emerge above the beautiful fluffy white clouds, illuminated by the ghostly glare of a Full Moon. I am delighted to find us up here, out of the heavy, enclosed darkness, where the sky stretches into the endless infinity of outer space.

Inspired by this wonderful opportunity, I grab the young man's hand tightly and yell, "Let's go!" Faster than a speeding bullet, we take off in a streak of white light. I briefly consider several destinations: Mars? Venus? before opting for the Moon. My companion is a younger colleague and he can't hold his breath or breathe in outer space too long.

Third hand, I see us streak up leaving a "jet-stream" tail of white light. We make a loop-de-loop around the moon, like a figure "8" and head back towards the opposite end of the night side of Earthall in but a few seconds time.

Now, first-hand I'm again holding onto my companion's hand as we head toward the dark blue and purple surface. We're high enough to have a strong sense of the spherical shape of Earth. Flying is as free and quick as running my finger over a globe.

Plunging into the atmosphere, I see our undersides begin to glow red-hot. Quickly, I switch attitude so we zoom straight down and only the tips of our fingers shining rosy-orange from the friction of the air.

However, after we get through the atmosphere, we find ourselves headed directly down into farmland. I adjust our angle once again so at least we're heading towards the ocean. But we've come in at such an acute angle, that it's hard to pull out of our rapid descent. Oh, God, I think, we're not going to make it. We're going to smash into the ocean!

I keep trying to pull us up, again and again. Maybe we'll only dive under the surface of the ocean a little ways, then emerge once more. I keep pulling and finally we swoop down and just b-a-r-e-l-y skim over the surface of the ocean, past the night shadow, into the light of day.
